Key Features

Size

Let’s start our ResMed AirMini AutoSet travel CPAP machine review by examining its size. Weighing in at just 0.66 lbs (300 grams) and measuring a mere 5.4 x 3.3 x 2.1 inches, it is one of the smallest and the most compact CPAP machines on the market.

The AirMini’s small size makes it an ideal companion for travelers, businessmen, and anyone who values their sleep while away from home. Unlike home CPAP machines, this ResMed portable CPAP easily fits into the palm of your hand, so packing it into your backpack, tote or carry-on suitcase is a breeze.

Its compact size and lightweight features let you travel worry-free without the need to lug around a separate bag just for your CPAP machine.

CPAP Mask Compatibility

Whether you prefer a nasal pillow mask, nasal mask, or full-face mask, the ResMed AirMini is compatible with a wide range of ResMed CPAP masks, so you can be sure to find one that works with your sleeping habits.

However, your choice of CPAP masks is limited to ResMed’s line of AirMini-compatible masks due to the unique air outlet design of this CPAP machine. This design restricts your CPAP tubing selection to the AirMini tubing specifically.

This AirMini-specific hose features a unique mask-end connection that houses a compartment for a HumidX heat moisture exchanger capsule, making it compatible only with AirMini CPAP masks that have the proper connection for the HumidX compartment.

We’ll look at the HumidX capsules in detail later in this ResMed AirMini review.

Luckily, there is a workaround if you prefer not to use an AirMini CPAP mask. You can pair the machine with the AirMini Tubing Connector Adapter, which lets you connect the ResMed travel CPAP to any non-heated CPAP tubing. Once connected, you’re free to use your favorite mask from any manufacturer.

You won’t be able to use a HumidX capsule with this setup, but you can still prevent CPAP dry mouth with a universal HME that is compatible with all CPAP masks and tubing. Simply place the HME between your mask and hose to enjoy the benefits of waterless CPAP humidification.

Here are the AirMini-specific masks that you can use based on the sleep apnea mask type you prefer:

Nasal Pillow

ResMed AirFit P10 Nasal Pillow Mask: Requires the P10 Mask Connector for AirMini. Alternatively, you can choose the ResMed P10 AirMini Setup Pack to get the P10 mask, AirMini tubing, HumidX and HumidX Plus capsules.

Nasal Mask

ResMed AirFit N30 Nasal Mask: Requires the N30 Mask Connector for Airmini. Or, choose the ResMed N30 AirMini Setup Pack for the complete package which includes the mask, AirMini tubing, HumidX and HumidX Plus capsules.

ResMed AirTouch/AirFit N20 Nasal Mask:  Requires the N20 Setup Pack for AirMini, which comes with the N20 AirMini Mask Connector, AirMini tubing, HumidX and HumidX Plus capsules.

Full Face Mask

ResMed AirFit F20 Full Face Mask: Requires the F20/F30 Setup Pack for AirMini, which includes the F20/F30 AirMini connector, AirMini tubing and one F20 HumidX.

ResMed AirFit F30 Full Face Mask: Requires the F20/F30 Setup Pack for AirMini. Note that there currently aren’t any HumidX and HumidX Plus cartridges for the AirFit F30 Full Face Mask.

Waterless Humidification

The waterless humidification system of the AirMini, also known as HumidX, makes it one of the best CPAP machines for travel. It saves on space and allows users to breathe moist air without having to carry a bulky humidifier or pack distilled water.

The HumidX is a heat and moisture exchange (HME) that captures the heat and moisture in your breath when you exhale. This heat and moisture is then released into the air when you take your next breath, so you can receive the benefits of CPAP humidification while avoiding the hassle of cleaning, refilling and packing a humidifier.

Still not sure how a HME works? Watch our 5 minute video to learn more:

CPAP humidification helps prevent dry mouth, throat, and nasal passages, making therapy significantly more comfortable. However, it is worth noting that the HumidX cartridges are not compatible with the AirFit F30 Full Face CPAP Mask.

Data and Compliance Reporting

The next part of our ResMed AirMini AutoSet CPAP machine review explores how you can view CPAP data on this travel machine. The AirMini uploads detailed therapy data to the cloud via the AirMini app, which is iOS and Android compatible. Once your sleep data is in the cloud, your doctors can access it through AirView, ResMed’s provider monitoring program.

Modern CPAP machines, including the AirMini, are equipped with Bluetooth connectivity, so you can track sleep therapy progress via a smartphone app. This means your doctor can assess your response to therapy without requiring an in-person appointment, saving you time and energy.

The AirMini app is pretty straightforward and easy to use. Everything you need is accessible from the dashboard, which conveniently displays mask seal, CPAP AHI, and usage hours.

Noise Level

If there’s one thing we don’t like about the AirMini, it’s the noise. At 30 decibels, it’s one of the louder travel CPAP devices on the market. Understandably, it is louder because the smaller motor has to work harder to produce the same air pressure as bigger home CPAPs that can house larger motors. There’s also much less room in travel CPAPs for soundproofing.

If you or your bed partner is sensitive to noise, a CPAP muffler can help dampen the sound. Or, take a look at the Breas Z2 Auto, the quietest travel CPAP at 26 dBA. Read our Breas Z2 vs AirMini review to see how these two machines stack up against each other.

Power Options

The AirMini supports various power options, ensuring uninterrupted CPAP therapy no matter where you are. It comes with a 2-pronged 110–240V universal power supply so you can use your CPAP anywhere in the word without spending extra on a voltage transformer. Depending on your destination, however, you may need a travel power plug adapter.

AirMini connected to Medistrom Pilot 24-Lite CPAP Battery

There’s also an optional AirMini DC Converter (sold separately) that allows you to run the CPAP from your car via the car cigarette lighter socket, making it perfect for camping trips and other outdoor adventures.

You can also use the AirMini with third party lithium batteries or CPAP battery packs if you wish to go off-grid. Many of these batteries can be charged by solar panels as well as by your car, RV, or boat. Read our CPAP battery review for the pros and cons and CPAP machine compatibility of our top-rated CPAP batteries.

With plenty of options for charging, there is no need to worry about draining your battery while traveling.

Exhalation Pressure Relief (EPR)

The Exhalation Pressure Relief (EPR) feature in the AirMini CPAP machine is designed to enhance your comfort during therapy. EPR lowers air pressure during exhalation, making it easier for you to breathe out against the air from your CPAP.

This gentle pressure relief allows for a more natural breathing pattern, ensuring a more restful and comfortable sleep while effectively treating sleep apnea. It is worth noting that the EPR feature is sometimes referred to by different names depending on the brand of the CPAP machine that you are using.

AutoRamp

Now, let’s talk about ResMed’s AutoRamp™ technology, a comfort feature that is the focus of numerous ResMed travel CPAP reviews.

Similar to traditional ramp, AutoRamp enhances comfort during the initial stages of sleep apnea therapy by starting treatment with ramp pressure that is lower than the prescribed pressure setting. Unlike ramp, which requires you to preset the length of time you want ramp to be active, AutoRamp doesn’t require any time setting. Instead it intelligently detects sleep onset and only starts increasing pressure to the therapeutic level once you’ve fallen asleep.

Three Operation Modes

The ResMed AirMini CPAP machine offers three therapy modes at one ResMed AirMini price.

1. AutoSet™

AutoSet, or auto CPAP mode, is a smart and adaptive setting that continuously monitors your breathing patterns throughout the night. It adjusts the air pressure delivered by the machine in real time to ensure optimal therapy.

AutoSet is ideal for those who experience varying levels of airway obstruction during sleep. It provides personalized and comfortable therapy without the need for manual pressure setting adjustments.

2. AutoSet™ for Her

This mode is specifically designed to address the unique needs of female CPAP users. It takes into account the different breathing patterns and pressure requirements that women may have during sleep apnea therapy.

Similar to AutoSet™ mode, it adjusts pressure levels dynamically to ensure optimal comfort and therapy effectiveness.

3. CPAP

In CPAP mode, users select a specific pressure setting that remains constant throughout the night. It’s best for individuals who have been prescribed a specific pressure level by their healthcare provider, following an in-lab sleep test.

CPAP mode is also commonly known as Fixed Pressure Mode because it provides a consistent pressure without fluctuations.
