In general, it is recommended to replace a mask cushion every three months and the complete mask every six months. A new and well-fitting mask will maximize the benefit of the CPAP treatment to all patients.
Signs that it is time to replace your mask:
- The mask is not as tight as before or the seal is leaking air.
- Parts of the mask are worn out and are not in good shape.
- The construction of the mask, such as plastic or silicone, begins to crack.
- The mask is deformed, causing leaking or discomfort.
If your mask is newer, before you replace your mask, try to adjust the straps on the mask and attempt to fit the mask on differently. Most of the time this will fix the leaks which are the result of an improper fit.
If the construction and seal of the mask are still in good shape and only parts are worn out, contact us to find out if it is possible to replace only the worn-out parts. A lot of manufacturers provide replacement parts, which helps avoid unnecessary costs.
Some CPAP users are reluctant to replace their old masks because they are afraid a new mask might not be as comfortable or that it would take time for it to break in.
Well, there are some great CPAP masks out there, and companies are improving them all the time. If you do your homework and have a little patience, you may find a mask that you’ll prefer over your old one.
Tips to help you find a new replacement mask:
- Find one that is optimized for comfort and is touted as highly sealable so that the treatment is more effective.
- Try a well-fit and stable headgear that can be easily adjusted even when the mask is on the face.
- Head straps should be easily clipped on and easy to remove.
- The airflow tube should be able to be rotated 360 degrees so that it won’t get in your way when you need to move your head around.
- The mask cushion should provide stability, comfort, and a good seal which will prevent leaks.
- Make sure the tubing can be removed easily.
- Vents should disperse air very quietly and effectively, which means a good night’s sleep for you and your bed partner.
- A mask should be very convenient to use as far as adjusting, wearing, and cleaning.
- Check to see if the mask can be easily disassembled and its parts replaced separately to help offset the cost of CPAP supplies.
