Modem vs Modem-Free: What’s the Difference?

In response to the global shortage of semiconductor chips, React Health and ResMed released modem-free versions of their best-selling devices, which are more affordable than their modem counterparts. But what does the built-in cellular modem do exactly? And how does a lack of it affect your therapy?

Remote Data Access

Since models without modems have no cellular connectivity, they can’t directly send your sleep data to your healthcare provider. They also don’t allow your provider to change the devices’ settings remotely.

App and SD Card

The AirSense 10 AutoSet with modem is compatible with the ResMed myAir app. There, you can monitor your sleep data and track your progress. The AirSense 10 C2C, on the other hand, does not offer cellular connectivity, which is required to use the myAir app. The only way you can view your compliance data is by generating it via the included SD card.

Since the modem version of the AirSense 10 AutoSet already supports remote data access, it does not come with an SD card—you have to purchase it separately.

With React Health’s Luna G3 APAP, you don’t have to worry about app compatibility. Both modem and modem-free versions support the 3B Luna QR app and come with SD cards, giving you more options to access your data.

Luna G3 vs AirSense 10 AutoSet: Similarities

First, let’s talk about why these two are some of the most popular choices among auto CPAP users. While these sleep apnea machines are made by different brands and carry different names, they share important features that can help you sleep more soundly.

Auto Ramp

Falling asleep faster is possible with the AirSense 10’s and Luna G3’s auto ramp feature. When activated, it enables each device to start at a low pressure and gradually increase the pressure once you’re asleep.

There is a slight difference between the ramp features of these devices. With the Luna G3, you can set the ramp time from 0 to 60 minutes–a wider range than the AirSense 10’s standard 45-minute timer.

Auto Start/Stop

Another convenient feature these two sleep apnea machines share is the auto start/stop mode (known as SmartStart for the AirSense 10). This feature automatically starts therapy as you breathe through your CPAP mask. It also stops therapy once you remove your mask. That means you won’t have to fumble with any of these devices whenever you get up in the middle of the night.

Exhalation Pressure Relief

Most React Health Luna and ResMed auto CPAP machines come standard with the exhalation pressure relief (EPR) feature (known as Reslex for the Luna G3). It lowers the delivered air pressure you need to exhale against, making it easier to breathe out.

Integrated Heated Humidifier

In designing these sleep apnea machines, comfort is apparently the name of the game. In addition to the comfort features above, they have built-in heated humidifiers, so you won’t have to worry about nasal congestion and a dry, sore throat.

ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet

For less complicated humidification adjustments, users can activate the AirSense 10 and Luna G3 heated humidifiers’ auto modes (known as Climate Control Auto in the AirSense 10). This feature enables the devices to automatically maintain a comfortable humidity level relative to your room’s conditions.

That’s not all—both the AirSense 10 and Luna G3 water chambers can be preheated before you start your therapy. Their warm-up modes can help prevent condensation in your CPAP mask and tubing.

Supports Heating Tubing

To effectively prevent moisture buildups and rainouts, the AirSense 10 and Luna G3 heated humidifiers can both be used with their respective heating tubing.

Also known as the ClimateLineAir heated tubing, the ResMed AirSense 10 heated tubing comes with a sensor to maintain a comfortable level of warmth throughout the tube regardless of your room’s temperature. The Luna G3 heated tubing also works with the device’s humidifier for consistent heat and humidity.

User Interface

While the AirSense 10 and Luna G3 don’t have the touchscreen found on newer CPAP machines, they’re designed with large color LCD screens that give you a clear view of the settings and data. They also come with simple on/off buttons and control dials for easy menu navigation.

Quiet Operation

Rated at around 26 dBA, the sound levels of these auto CPAP machines are almost the same. Both the Luna G3 and AirSense 10 are incredibly quiet machines with nearly silent motors. While the operating noise does get louder at higher pressures, both CPAP machines still run as quietly as a whisper, literally (the sound level of a whisper nearby is 30 dBA).

Luna G3 vs AirSense 10 AutoSet: Differences

Despite the several similarities between the AirSense 10 and the Luna G3 Auto, they each have their own distinctive features that can make one CPAP more appealing to certain users.

Smartphone App

A major advantage of the Luna G3 is that both the modem-free and modem models can be used with the brand’s smartphone app: the 3B Luna QR. The app lets you view sleep therapy data from your Luna G3 CPAP by scanning the machine generated QR code. Your sleep therapy data will be automatically uploaded to the app and React Health’s web-based iCodeConnect data reporting program.

ResMed also has its own app (myAir), but it doesn’t support the AirSense 10 C2C model. To use the myAir app, you must have a ResMed auto CPAP machine with a built-in modem such as the AirSense 10 AutoSet (with modem) or the newer AirSense 11.

If you do choose the AirSense 10 modem version, your sleep data will be automatically uploaded to the app, which then generates your nightly myAir score. The app also provides you with full-time support, educational resources, and tailored coaching to help you stay compliant with your therapy.

Compliance Report Program

CPAP machine compliance is a breeze with the Luna G3 APAP. All you need to do is link the device with the 3B Luna QR app, and you can view or generate your compliance report on the iCodeConnect web portal. You can also upload your data from the device’s SD card or input your iCode (the 16-digit string under the “Report” menu on the screen) to access your compliance report.

Accessing your compliance report is more complicated with the AirSense 10. If your AirSense 10 Auto CPAP machine has a modem, you can use the myAir app to generate your compliance report. But if you have the AirSense 10 C2C version, you’ll have to install a third-party software program like OSCAR in order to generate a report. And unlike the Luna G3, the AirSense 10 offers limited options for data export: an SD card is your only option.

On-Screen Data

Monitoring your progress helps with CPAP machine compliance. That’s why the Luna G3’s home screen displays all of the key information about your sleep therapy under the “Report” menu.

The AirSense 10 AutoSet (modem and modem-free versions) also lets you access your sleep data on its home screen (under the “Sleep Report” menu). But before you can view your AHI, you still have to enable “Essentials Plus.” The extra steps make the process a bit more tedious compared to viewing your data on the Luna G3.

Size and Weight

While the dimensions of the AirSense 10 and Luna G3 (with their humidifiers attached) are nearly identical, their unique designs give each a whole different appearance.

With a wide yet short profile, the Luna G3 APAP appears more compact. Meanwhile, the AirSense 10 AutoSet is a few inches taller but has a smaller footprint. Weighing in at only 2.75 pounds, it’s also lighter than the Luna G3, which weighs 3.75 pounds.

Heated Humidifier Design

Like the Luna G3 water chamber, the AirSense 10 water chamber can be easily removed. The difference is that when the ResMed water chamber is removed, the device’s length can be significantly reduced for easy portability–unlike the Luna G3, which has a heating plate sticking out the side even without the chamber. And when you’re not using the AirSense 10’s humidifier, you can seal the opening with an optional side cover.

Energy Efficiency

The 15-watt difference in energy usage between the AirSense 10 and the Luna G3 is barely noticeable. But for outdoorsy CPAP users who often plug their devices into their cars or portable power stations, the Luna G3 is a more energy-efficient choice. It runs on 65 watts, whereas the AirSense 10 requires a 90-watt power supply.

Price

Most CPAP users know that ResMed CPAP machines usually come with heftier price tags than other brands. In this case, however, ResMed priced its AirSense 10 C2C lower than the Luna G3 and AirSense 10 with modem. As of this review’s last updated date, the cost of the Luna G3 Auto CPAP on RespShop is over $700. For the AirSense 10 C2C, it’s around $600, while the modem version costs over $900.

ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet: Pros & Cons

Do these two sleep apnea machines stay true to their advertised features? Here’s an overview of what we’ve heard from many AirSense 10 users.

Pros

Supported by OSCAR

Many long-time CPAP users prefer using OSCAR to view their sleep data. Compared to the iCodeConnect and other programs, OSCAR provides a more detailed report about your sleep therapy in easy-to-view charts. Access to thorough data can help you easily make the necessary adjustments to your device’s settings.

Unlike the AirSense 10, the Luna G3 is not supported by OSCAR. So if analyzing your medical data on OSCAR is your top priority, you might want to get the ResMed AirSense 10 auto CPAP.

Quiet

Some people who have used both the AirSense 10 and Luna G3 found the former quieter. In fact, most AirSense 10 reviews are about how it barely produces any noise.

Even though the noise levels of the two devices are rated at around 26 dBA, the ResMed AirSense 10 auto CPAP seems to be truly whisper-quiet, making it perfect for sound-sensitive sleep apnea patients.

Cons

Connectivity

Without a way to connect to the myAir app or wirelessly send data to your provider, the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet C2C isn’t for most modern CPAP users, despite the savings. If you’re used to viewing your sleep data on your phone, be prepared to spend more on the AirSense 10 with modem.

Luna G3 Auto CPAP: Pros & Cons

Now let’s see what people like and what they don’t like as much about the Luna G3.

Pros

Connectivity

React Health has a brilliant workaround for the lack of a modem in the Luna G3 auto CPAP. Simply link the device to the 3B Luna QR app, and you can have an easy way to access your sleep data on your phone or laptop.

Interface

Most Luna G3 users love how the device displays a comprehensive breakdown of their data on the home screen. They also found the level of customization and the layout of the settings better than that of the ResMed S10 AutoSet.

For better on-screen data viewing and easier menu navigation, you’ll want to go for the Luna G3.

Cons

Reslex

One of the few complaints about the Luna G3 APAP is its exhalation pressure relief feature, known as Reslex. Some users find it hard to get used to, even after tweaking the settings. Others think that its overall performance just isn’t as good as ResMed’s EPR.

The Verdict

Those who want a no-frills sleep apnea machine will find the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet and the React Health Luna G3 APAP good options. As for the overall performance of these devices, there really isn’t much of a difference, apart from issues with the Luna G3’s EPR (which might just be a problem with the settings).

That said, choosing between the two is a bit of a challenge. So before making a decision, think about the things that make CPAP machine compliance easier for you.

If you prefer to view your data easily, the Luna G3 APAP displays all key information on its screen. Although it has no built-in modem, it’s compatible with a QR code app, letting you upload your data and generate compliance reports with ease.

But until the device becomes compatible with OSCAR, you might want to go for the AirSense 10 AutoSet for a more comprehensive data analysis. While the iCodeConnect also offers a detailed view of your data, many users prefer OSCAR as it effectively helps them optimize their sleep therapy. And if you decide to shell out a few hundred dollars more for the modem version of the AirSense 10, you can access the many convenient features of the myAir app.

Often travel with your CPAP? The ResMed AirSense 10 is 1 pound lighter and more compact (without the water chamber). But the Luna G3 consumes less energy, making it a better choice if you typically use a portable power source.
