Luna G3 Review: Key Features

ResMed, Philips Respironics, Fisher & Paykel, Transcend–there are plenty of popular CPAP brands you can choose from. What sets the React Health Luna G3 APAP apart from other auto CPAP machines? Why buy a Luna G3 Auto CPAP instead of a ResMed CPAP machine?

We’ll answer these questions and more as we break down all the machine features in this Luna G3 review.

User Interface

Unlike the popular ResMed AirSense 11, the Luna G3 Auto CPAP machine doesn’t have a touchscreen. But it does have a large color LCD screen, wide on/off button, and a control dial. This interface is similar to the ResMed AirSense 10 but the Luna G3 features a much larger 3.5″ screen.

The machine offers a high level of customization and the icons are nicely laid out on the screen. Its well-designed interface means you’ll have no problems navigating the menu and settings—the icons are clearly labeled and self explanatory.

Apart from the intuitive navigation, the interface features an “Accessories Reminder” mode. This helpful mode displays three options: air filter, tubing, and mask. When these options are enabled, the Luna G3 APAP will notify you via audible and visual alerts when it’s time to replace these CPAP accessories

Comfort Features

With Reslex, auto ramp, auto start/stop, and two operation modes, the Luna G3 Auto CPAP is packed with all the comfort features you need for a better night’s sleep.

  • Reslex: The device’s exhalation pressure relief function makes it easier to breathe out, allowing for a more natural breathing pattern. The Luna G3 Reslex setting can be turned off or set from 1 to 3 with each number corresponding to the amount of pressure decrease on exhalation.
  • Auto Ramp: To help you fall asleep faster, the Luna G3 auto ramp mode delivers a low pressure at the start of therapy and gradually increases it once you’re asleep.
  • Auto Start/Stop: This feature begins therapy when you inhale through your CPAP mask and stops therapy whenever you remove the mask.
  • Auto CPAP and Standard CPAP Modes: With two therapy modes, the Luna G3 APAP works with both auto CPAP and manual CPAP prescriptions. You can set pressure at a fixed level or set a pressure range for auto CPAP therapy. This versatility makes it a perfect machine for CPAP beginners. Heated Humidifier & Heated Tubing

Next up in our Luna G3 review, we’ll examine one of the most important components of a CPAP machine: the heated humidifier. With the Luna G3 Auto CPAP, you can say goodbye to common CPAP side effects like dry mouth, sore throat, nasal congestion and water in the CPAP hose.

The Luna G3 features a built-in heated humidifier with five settings and an auto mode. Selecting the auto mode enables the Luna G3 humidifier to maintain a comfortable humidity level relative to the environment. You can also preheat the humidifier for 30 minutes before hitting the hay.

To prevent moisture buildup or rainout in the CPAP hose, you can use the Luna G3 heated tubing that comes with the machine. The heated hose works with the Luna G3 humidifier to keep the temperature consistent as air travels through the tube’s 6-foot length. The Luna G3 heated hose temperature can be set to auto or manually adjusted between 5 heated levels. It can also be turned off. CPAP machines rarely come standard with a heated hose, so this is a nice bonus.

Noise Level

One of the most common concerns of new CPAP users is “How loud is a CPAP machine?”

With an average noise level of less than 28 dBA at 10 cm H2O, the Luna G3 APAP ranks solidly in the middle of our Average CPAP Noise Level Comparison Chart. While you should expect the Luna G3 to run louder at higher pressures, the machine is still extremely quiet and the hum of the motor actually provides a rather soothing background noise. As long as your CPAP mask seals well, there’s no reason to expect the Luna G3 to keep you up at night.

CPAP Mask Compatibility

Full face, nasal, nasal pillow—you can use whichever CPAP mask you prefer with the Luna G3 Auto CPAP. Apart from its universal mask compatibility, the machine also offers a mask-fitting test, so you can check for any mask leaks that can affect your CPAP AHI.

Portability

While the Luna G3 Auto CPAP is a bit bulkier than other auto CPAP machines, it’s as lightweight as a winter coat and makes for a great travel companion. It even comes with a carry case and a dual voltage (100-240V) 65-watt power supply for your traveling convenience.

Water Chamber Design

Most sleep apnea machines require users to remove the water chamber before filling it up. In some cases, removing and inserting the chamber can be tricky. But with the Luna G3 APAP, that’s nothing to worry about.

The 360 ml Luna G3 water chamber can be filled while attached to the machine, eliminating an extra step. And when you need to detach the water chamber for cleaning, all you need to do is push it down. The Luna G3 water chamber will pop up for easy removal.

This is one of the most user-friendly water chamber design we’ve seen to date and is one of the highlights of this Luna G3 review. Users with limited hand mobility should definitely consider this machine since you’ll need to clean the water chamber weekly for optimal therapy.

Data Access

Earlier in our Luna G3 review, we looked at the machine’s intuitive interface. Now let’s explore beyond the overall layout of the menu and see how the Luna G3 APAP displays sleep data onscreen.

The home screen’s “Report” menu conveniently displays your “Usage Summary.” This contains all the relevant information about your therapy, like AHI, average leak rate, average pressure setting, and more.

The convenience of uploading data is another key point of this Luna G3 review. To generate a complete compliance report, you have multiple options with the Luna G3: QR code, iCode, SD card, and via cellular connectivity (for the LG3600 model only).

QR code scanning

Under the same menu, there are two other icons: “iCode QR/QR+” and “iCode.” The first one generates the device’s QR code, which you can scan on your phone via the 3B Luna QR app. After scanning, your sleep data will be automatically uploaded to the app and iCodeConnect—React Health’s web-based compliance data program.

iCode

If you don’t have the app, you can still generate a CPAP report using an iCode, a string of 16 digits automatically generated by the machine. You’ll need to select “iCode” under the “Report” menu to view your iCode options. The Luna G3 generates six iCodes, each corresponding a different time period. To view your compliance report, you’ll need to use the online iCodeConnect portal.

SD card

Like other CPAP devices, the Luna G3 APAP includes an SD card. You can download CPAP data from the SD card using the iCodeConnect program.

For detailed instructions on generating CPAP reports from iCode and SD card, please refer to the Patient Guide to Running Compliance Reports.

Cellular

Prefer to let your provider handle all data and compliance tracking? If you value convenience in therapy reporting, make sure to get the Luna G3 model with a built-in cellular modem (LG3600). This modem sends sleep data to providers using cellular connection, and it also allows them to make remote changes to the device’s settings.

Luna G3 APAP Review Takeaways

The Luna G3 Auto CPAP with heated humidifier is a solid CPAP machine that gets the job done. It’s quiet, compatible with all CPAP masks and despite the lack of a touchscreen, its interface is still easy to navigate. It also comes with comfort features that help CPAP beginners adjust to therapy.

Loaded with all the convenient data reporting features found in more expensive machines, the Luna G3 APAP clearly doesn’t sacrifice quality for price. It even has a unique push-and-release water chamber, which you can refill while it’s still attached to the device.

If you’re fine with basic data and compliance reporting and can do without remote data tracking, the modem-free Luna G3 APAP is a great budget-friendly choice. If remote data access matters, you have the option to pay a bit more for the modem model.
